Dozens of snow ghost spruce trees encrusted in rime ice stand across a rolling snowfield along the Dalton Highway in Interior Alaska.

Dalton Highway Twilight

Alaska

Above treeline on the Dalton Highway, the exposed spruce get loaded with so much rime ice they become something else entirely. They stand in the snow by the dozens, frozen solid, while the February sky runs through colors most people would assume were edited. They're not. High latitude winter twilight just looks like this — violet and cold and completely quiet. Photo © copyright by Michael Schultz.
