Black and white brown bear profile portrait with fur detail and watchful eye, Lake Clark National Park Alaska

Watchful Eye

Alaska

Brown bear portrait at Lake Clark National Park. This close—close enough to see every strand of fur, every whisker, the texture of that nose, and most importantly, that eye. That watchful, intelligent eye that's fully aware of my presence even as the bear appears focused elsewhere. I converted to black and white because at this intimacy, color becomes distraction. In monochrome, this becomes pure form and texture—the incredible detail of the fur, the powerful profile, the quiet intensity of an apex predator. These bears tolerate photographers at close range, but they're never unaware. That sideways glance says everything: I see you. I know you're there. This is the privilege of photographing coastal brown bears—intimate access to one of the most powerful animals on earth. Photo © copyright by Michael Schultz.
