Firstly, you'll need a DSLR or Mirriorless camera with manual settings and a wide-angle lens 12-20mm. A lens with a wide aperture, such as f/2.8 or wider, will be useful to let in as much light as possible, especially since the aurora borealis is often visible at night. This will allow you to adjust the exposure, focus, and white balance to capture the dynamic and ever-changing aurora borealis.
You should also consider bringing additional lenses with different focal lengths to capture close-up details or distant views of the aurora borealis. Telephoto lens should be avoided, but a range of 12-24mm for the wide angle focal range and up to 50mm for those low on the horizon displays where that extra punch in will bring the lights closer to your camera without the whole frame being overtaken by the aurora with no foreground element. Learn to work your camera in the dark and to manually set your focus on the brightest star or a far away light. Some folks will set their focus during the day on far away subjects and tape the lens so that it's ready to go once they head out at night. Infinity focus isn't always right on the infinity mark on your lens.

Experiment with different settings and bracket your shots to find the right balance between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO for the lighting conditions and your artistic vision. In addition to its natural beauty, Tromsø also boasts a thriving cultural scene and a variety of winter activities. With its minimal light pollution and prime location under the auroral oval, Tromsø offers ample opportunities to photograph the lights from September through April. To photograph the northern lights in Tromsø, head to Kvaløya Island or take a fjord cruise for a unique perspective.
Reykjavík, Iceland
Iceland's capital city and the surrounding countryside provide excellent vantage points for aurora chasers.
To escape the city lights in Reykjavik, head to Thingvellir National Park or the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

To witness this wondrous natural display, you'll want to aim for crystal clear, moonless nights. With that said I enjoy shooting the aurora with a full moon. The moon has no effect on how the aurora reacts and a new moon isn't necessary. Especially in the winter months, the moonlight will light up any foreground and surroundings giving you awesome shots. I also prefer clouds in my photographs to give the overall photo depth and contrast. Despite popular belief you can see the aurora under the moon and clouds depending on how thick they are.

Staying awake is another essential part of seeing the aurora.
Depending on the solar activity the most activity with the aurora can take place between 12am-3am. The Northern Lights occur when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with particles in the Earth's atmosphere, and the magnetic field near the poles helps to channel these particles towards the Earth's surface.

If you're planning a trip specifically to see the Northern Lights, it's worth doing some research on the dates of the equinoxes and the current state of the Earth's magnetic field. However, cloud cover can quickly hamper your visibility. In addition to cloud cover, light pollution can also make it difficult to see the Northern Lights clearly. Be sure to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and plan your aurora-viewing excursions accordingly. This is why it's important to find a dark spot away from city lights, where you can fully appreciate the beauty of the aurora borealis. Cloudy skies will obscure the lights, so you'll want to choose a night with a clear dark sky for the best chance of success. Another tip is to allow your eyes time to adjust to the darkness - it can take up to 20 minutes for your eyes to fully adapt to low light conditions.

Capturing the Mesmerizing Northern Lights: Mastering Your Camera Settings
Photographing the captivating northern lights requires the right camera settings to do justice to the vivid colors and dynamic movement of the aurora. One of the most crucial camera settings when photographing the northern lights is the white balance, so make sure to set it accordingly to avoid color distortions, but if you're shooting in RAW then you can change the white balance later in post processing if you got it wrong in camera.
- Shutter speed: A long exposure is crucial to capture the northern lights movement and brightness. We recommend starting at around 5-10 seconds, adjusting based on activity. Granted this will be determined on the lens and camera you are using.
- Aperture: A wide aperture ( F2.8 or lower ) allows more light in, crucial for photographing the faint aurora against a dark sky.
- ISO: Start with an ISO of around 800-1600, depending on the brightness of the aurora and the ambient light.
- Shoot in RAW: Shooting in RAW vs JPEG makes sure you capture all the information of the scene and leaves you with more to work with in making the final result. JPEG is the camera baking everything in and there's little to no wiggle room if you got say the white balance wrong whereas in RAW you can change that to whatever you'd like or what works for the scene in post after the fact.
Start by setting a wide aperture, such as f/2.8 or lower, to allow in as much light as possible. Next, switch your camera to manual mode to have full control over your settings. Pair this with a long exposure time, between 5-10 seconds, ( you might need longer exposure times depending on camera and lens combo ) to ensure you capture the full essence of the dancing lights. Depending on how the aurora is acting in the sky, your settings will constantly be changing. Remember we're shooting light and that light gets bright and dim and it can happen very quickly, so we have to be ready to adjust our cameras for those moments.
To avoid overexposure, keep your ISO low, in the range of 800-1600 however don't be surprised if you end up in the higher range of ISO values of 3200-6400. Remember, the northern lights are ever-changing, so don't be afraid to experiment with your settings. However, if you notice that the northern lights appear too bright, try decreasing your ISO and adjusting your aperture and exposure time accordingly. If the lights appear dimmer, try increasing your ISO, exposure time, and aperture size to soak up as much of that ethereal glow as possible. With a bit of trial and error, you'll be able to freeze the mesmerizing beauty of the aurora in your photographs.

We also teach how to use techniques like light painting to enhance the foreground during long exposures.
Understanding the Aurora: The Space Weather Data

Witnessing the captivating display of the aurora borealis is a dream for many, but the ability to predict and plan for such an event is very difficult. The data behind the aurora's workings holds the key to determining your chances of seeing this natural wonder, depending on your location.
Several factors must align for a grand aurora display to occur, as evidenced by the recent event on May 10th, 2024. The BZ, or the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field, plays a vital role. While a negative BZ is preferred, the aurora can still be visible under a positive BZ, provided you are situated far enough north.
Predicting the aurora's behavior is a complex task, as the data is gathered in real-time from satellites in space and relayed to us on Earth. The speed at which the aurora travels determines the lag time before it reaches our planet, making it challenging to forecast its appearance far in advance.
While numerous aurora forecast apps claim to assist in this endeavor, their reliability has been questionable. Instead, I recommend using the free aurora app SpaceWeatherLive, which provides up-to-the-minute updates on the aurora's activity, giving you a play-by-play of its ever-changing dynamics.
Why the KP Index Isn't the Best Predictor of Aurora Strength
When it comes to forecasting the strength and visibility of the northern lights, many people rely on the KP index. However, the KP number is often misunderstood. While it's true that the KP index can give us an idea of how far south the aurora might be visible, it doesn't directly predict the intensity or the behavior of the aurora itself.

The KP index measures the level of geomagnetic activity, giving a scale from 0 to 9. A higher number indicates stronger geomagnetic activity, which increases the likelihood that the aurora will be visible further south. But here's the key: the KP index doesn't tell us how intense or dynamic the aurora will be. it simply tells us the expected range of visibility - how far south the aurora might reach based on the disturbance in Earth's magnetic field.
For photographers and aurora chasers, the KP index is far less important when you're in the northern locations, like Alaska or Norway, where the aurora is frequently visible. The further north you are, the less relevant the KP number becomes. Instead, the focus should shift to real-time data on how the aurora is actually behaving. We closely monitor solar wind speed, magnetic field orientation, and other space weather metrics to get a clearer picture of the northern lights activity in that moment.
In other words, while the KP index can give a broad idea of where the aurora might be visible, the tru forecasting lies in understand the current space weather data and how it impacts aurora formation. This is why aurora predictions are much more reliable when based on up-to-the-minute information about solar activity and geomagnetic conditions, rather than simply looking at the Kp index alone.

Post-Processing Tips
Once you've captured your photos, it's time to bring that image to life through post-processing. While Northern lights photos don't need heavy editing, adjusting contrast, brightness, and white balance can bring out the best in your images especially your RAW images. The LCD display on the back of your camera will show you a JPEG version with in camera edits of what it will look like, but once you get to your computer you'll notice your image will be flat and dull, this is the beauty of shooting in RAW! We are capturing all the data in the field and we bring the image back to life on our computer.

We focus on techniques to make the aurora pop while preserving the natural beauty of the scene. I know it's tempting to crank that saturation slider and vibrance slider on your images, but PLEASE don't be one of those people!
